Review of Ellery Creek Campground in the Shasta-Trinity National Forest

Review of Ellery Creek Campground in the Shasta-Trinity National Forest

Located on the upper McCloud Arm of Shasta Lake with Ellery Creek passing through as it empties into the lake.  I could just imagine myself with a hot cup of coffee in my hand at 5:30 in the morning, staring out onto the lack of movement on the lake and listening to the empty echo of the morning atmosphere.  Perfection.

The campground is terraced into the sloping hillside above Shasta Lake with a small strand of beach at the font end.  There are 19 sites here with 5 of them designated specifically for RV campers (bummer, it doesn't have hookups).  The sites designed for RV line up next to each other at the frontmost part of the camp.  They are shaded well by the large oak trees above.  Each of these sites has an unobstructed view of the lake and includes a picnic table, fire pit and small 2-person tent pad at the back end of these sites.  The entire campground road is paved and has paved parking spurs.

This camp is also a great location for boaters with the boat launch just down the road at Hirz Bay.  One of the campers we ran into at the campground informed us that smaller boats can be moored on the shore of this camp at certain times of the year.  If you are looking to get out of the summer heat, Lake Shasta Caverns are just a short drive away as well.

Although I have highlighted the RV sites, this camp has some beautiful tent and tent/trailer sites as well.  Check out sites 11 and 12 (11 was occupied by campers while we were here so you won't see the 360 photos just yet.)

In the Reviews:

4.1/5 on Google reviews.  The negative reviews of the campground generally center around the bugs.  Mosquitos, meat wasps, centipedes and spiders were irritating to those giving lower reviews.

The most negative review - Sara S. (most likely a tent camper) states, "We only stayed long enough to check out the campsites, which were not even 100 square feet (tiny).  There is no camp host.  Don't waste your time going here.  Be cautious of the Bears, and keep ALL food in the bear box.  We made the mistake of leaving out a flat of 12 Cup of Noodles.  Very scary to hear a bear eating your food at night while you're in a tent."

The most positive review - Billy de Haan has been camping here for the past 44 years.  In 2017 he posted on Facebook, "The lake is about 62 degrees and emerald green and down about 45' late in the season.  I caught 15 trout in 2 days around the bend in the McCloud River.  The stars at night seem so close you (could) grab them...You must book 6 months in advance to get the primo sites.  It is simply majestic here!"
