Huckleberry Campground is located on the western side of Big Basin Redwoods State Park, 1.4 miles from the Big Basin Headquarters and grocery store. The camp is situated in the upland environment with smaller redwood trees. Union Creek runs on the southern side of camp while Sempervirens Creek runs through the western side. Many of the sites back right up to Union Creek.
Of all the Big Basin Campgrounds, this camp has the most variety of camping styles. It offers walk-in sites on the northern side of camp, car camping and small RV/trailer camping as well as cabin camping on the eastern side. The sites are small to moderate in size, fitting a single tent - 4-person to 10-person depending on the site. Huckleberry Campground sites are also the most private in Big Basin; they offer the most space in between campsites. This being said, the inner loop has less privacy than the outer loop and it often hosts loud campers on the weekends. The camp road is paved while the parking pads are not.
Because this Huckleberry Campground is open all year, there were a few campers navigating the rain on the weekend in February when we collected photos. The couple we spoke to at the campground enjoyed late February camping here because the cooler weather kept the bugs away and the louder weekend crowds weren't out camping yet. Plus, they said, the waterfall hikes were at their best. The only downfall to Huckleberry Campground, according to these campers, was its' distance from the Big Basin Headquarters and many of the trailheads.
